Below you will find student work form the Concept & Composition Figurative Intensive that I taught @ California Art Institute. I have been meaning to post this for some time. These are a selection of color poster studies and compositional sketches.
The poster study is a portrait of the light. It is the state of color relationship within the visual field. It is a small, abstract, color sketch that represents the major tonal relationships of the composition.
Compositional sketches are essentially tonal (value) studies. The exercises grow in complexity as I gradually introduce the Elements of Design (i.e. line, size, shape, direction, value, color, etc.). By asking students to isolate specific elements of design and to combine them in a sketch they begin to discover novel solutions to design problems.
Some of the pieces selected were done as homework.
